Ecomed Medical is giving back to the community in every way we can. Read below just some of our heart warming stories.

Donation Lichtenburg Cancer Clinic NPO

Making a difference where it matters most. Ecomed recently had the privilege of supporting the Lichtenburg Cancer Clinic, a dedicated NPO that provides essential care and oxygen support to multiple cancer patients in need. Their previous oxygen concentrator, originally donated by Ecomed, had unfortunately reached the end of its lifespan and could no longer be repaired. In response, Ecomed was proud to facilitate the donation of a new oxygen concentrator to ensure the clinic can continue delivering vital support to their patients. It’s initiatives like these that reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting our communities and making a meaningful impact where it is needed most.

Ladysmith Hospice

Thank you so much Ecomed Medical for the generous donation of the equipment much needed for our patients. We appreciate your support and loved having you at our 4×4 event! Thank you for the water and pens too!

Mieke’s Story

At a very young age, Mieke was diagnosed with multiple cardiac and pulmonary conditions, as well as an immune deficiency disease. By just 9 years old, she already needed a pacemaker to help regulate her heart. Although she is not on full-time oxygen, Mieke relies on oxygen support during cardiac arrhythmia episodes to stay safe. Over the years, her medical costs have grown significantly, placing a heavy burden on her family. Through incredible determination, they previously hosted a golf day to raise funds for a portable oxygen concentrator—an essential lifeline Mieke uses when traveling to her doctors and attending school. Sadly, the unit was damaged beyond affordable repair. After seeing the family’s story on Facebook, Ecomed, alongside Hot FM, stepped in with overwhelming generosity. They sponsored Mieke with a brand-new portable oxygen concentrator, giving her the freedom to enjoy daily activities and simply be a child. The family was deeply emotional and beyond grateful. This incredible gesture from Ecomed and Hot FM will truly change Mieke’s life going forward

World Prematurity Day

We were honoured to support Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital’s celebration of World Prematurity Day. Each year, on 17 November, the world comes together to recognise the strength of babies born too soon and the incredible families and caregivers who support them. As Pelonomi marks this important day on 21 November 2025, we were proud to contribute by donating gift bags filled with essential baby-care items to help families during this delicate journey. It’s a privilege to stand alongside the dedicated healthcare teams making a difference every day.

We are overjoyed to share some incredible news! Thanks to the kindness and generosity of GROOTfm 90.5 and Ecomed Medical , Calvin’s entire operation costs, including the anesthesia, hospital, and doctor fees, have been fully covered for his upcoming surgery on 15 January 2025. Also for Pizzayiro Andries for the amazing Pizza gift (Calvin’s Favorite of course!) Words cannot express our gratitude for this amazing blessing. Your support has lifted a huge financial burden and given Calvin the chance to take another step, literally, toward healing and mobility. To everyone who continues to pray, share, and support this journey: thank you for standing with us. Every message, donation, and act of care keeps us moving forward. Let’s keep Calvin in our thoughts as he prepares for his next operation. Together, we are helping him walk again!

Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss in SA – Zuan

Zuan (13) heard the first sounds through his cochlear implant! After relying on hearing aids since age 2 – which sadly could no longer help – this activation day marked a turning point in his life. Zuan was understandably overwhelmed and unsure, as the first sounds from a cochlear implant can feel strange and unfamiliar. But with time, his brain will adapt and learn to make sense of all the new sounds around him. He still needs a second implant to support his speech and full hearing, but for now, we celebrate this incredible first step. A massive THANK YOU to every single donor who helped make this moment possible. You’ve given Zuan the priceless gift of hearing.

Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss in SA

On 17 October, little Abigail (just 1 year old) heard sound for the very first time when her cochlear implant was switched on. At first, she was unsure – confused by each new sound, and she kept pulling off the device. But then, a smile appeared, and she showed a shy reaction that her mother had never seen before. A life was changed. A future was changed. We are forever grateful to every donor and supporter who made this possible. You gave Abigail the most beautiful gift, the gift of hearing.

A lifeline for Duncan: less pain, more possibility

I wanted to share a very touching story of a small boy called Duncan, who was diagnosed with autism from a young age and is now facing the challenges of Type 1 Diabetes. Due to his condition, his daily finger pricks are very overwhelming for him. Ecomed has stepped in to pay for the surgery of an insulin port and a years’ worth of consumables.

Bella’s Blessings

A heartfelt thank you to Ecomed Medical for donating a life-saving suction machine to Bella’s Blessings! Your generous support is already making a difference in the daily care of one of our little fighters. Your compassion brings hope, health, and comfort to children who need it most. We’re so grateful—and excited for a meaningful partnership ahead!

Desmond’s Journey

Desmond’s neighbours found him and rushed him to the nearest private hospital, where emergency surgery was performed. The doctors saved his life, but further surgery is needed, as the bullet has not yet been removed. Desmond had to cancel his medical aid after losing his job. His medical team advised against transferring him to a state hospital, as he is still too weak. That’s why his wife, Selmone, created a fundraising account—to raise the R200,000 needed for his treatment. His friend Diane also reached out to Good Morning Angels, as they’ve raised only R30,000 so far—and time is running out.

Relief after hospitalisation

After 37 days of dad being hospitalized he is discharged. At last…we are grateful the Lord pulled him through and gave him another chance. Thank you everyone for their support and prayers. With a big thank you to Ecomed Medical for home oxygen which will be part of our daily routine.

Mrs. A. Mitchell

Celebrating a Remarkable Life – 105 Years Young! On the 7th of April 2025, we had the honor of visiting one of our incredible patients, Mrs. A. Mitchell, who recently celebrated her 105th birthday. This inspiring great-great-great grandmother (wow!) currently lives with her son Patrick and daughter in law Jenny, who cares for her full-time after an earlier injury requiring regular care. Though she sometimes misses her independence, she is appreciative of the love and concern for her wellbeing. Mrs Mitchell is on oxygen 24/7 and is fully equipped with a concentrator, traveler and backup cylinder from Ecomed and she remains mentally sharp. She enjoys watching birds from her window, soaking up the sun, and watching TV to pass the time. While she does experience some pain and moves with assistance, her spirit is truly inspiring. When asked about the secret to her long life, she simply laughed and said, “Coffee… lots of it!”. What she treasures most is time with her family—especially getting hugs from her grandchildren. Her advice to the world? “Make the most of each day.” Mrs. Mitchell, thank you for the inspiration. We loved every moment of our visit and wish you many more joyful days ahead!

Nelspruit Relay for Life

On the 14th of March, a dedicated team of 10 staff members from Ecomed Nelspruit branch took part in the Nelspruit Relay for Life, an event aimed at raising awareness and funds for cancer research. Their participation was deeply personal, as they came together in support of a beloved colleague who is courageously battling cancer. This collective effort not only highlighted the team’s solidarity but also underscored the strength of community in the fight against cancer. Throughout the event, the team kept spirits high with their infectious enthusiasm. Whether through team-building activities or simply providing a word of encouragement to one another, their presence was a constant source of positivity. Their efforts were not just about walking the relay but about showing support, strength, and hope to their colleague in the midst of their cancer journey. The Relay for Life event was not only a testament to the power of community but also a celebration of hope and courage in the face of adversity. As the team walked, they knew that their efforts were making a real difference in the lives of people affected by cancer. Their participation in the event will remain a cherished memory, representing a powerful show of solidarity and the strength that comes when people unite for a common cause. The team’s continued support for their colleague reflects a deep sense of compassion and dedication, proving that no one has to face a battle like cancer alone. Together, they will continue to stand strong and fight for a future free of cancer.

I really appreciate it.

Simon Makgobela

After years of dreaming to participate at the Paralympics as a cyclist, Simon Makgobela from Munsieville has now decided to take up tennis to reach his dream. After reading about Simon in the News in 2019, Greg de Freitas, the director of Ecomed Medical decided he wanted to help. Simon told him about the train accident in which he lost his legs at the age of 16 and how important cycling was to him. He was struggling to provide for his wife and four kids, and make enough money to compete in cycling races. He had to depend on donations which he mostly received by standing on street corners. Greg said he was amazed by Simon’s courage and attitude, and he wanted to help Simon to have the same opportunities as any able-bodied person. He did not want Simon to worry about providing for his family – he wanted him to focus only on his dream, so he has been helping the family out with R10 000 per month to survive. Simon also mentioned to Greg that he would like to start playing tennis, and with the help of a few well-placed connections Simon started taking tennis lessons. Simon explained he tried to be the best in cycling as he wanted to have a way to support his family, but getting sponsorship was difficult. He now only cycles for fun and exercise. “Maybe tennis can take me far and one day I will be able to afford a nice home for my children to stay in,” Simon said. He added that he would like to thank Greg who helped him a lot. He wants to make Greg happy and proud. His dream is still to go to the Paralympics but this time it won’t be in a cycling chair, but in a specialized tennis chair.

It is with great gratitude that we as a family today would like to thank Ecomed for donating Annette Claassen’s wheelchair. We would like to thank Mr Greg De Freitas very much for the donation, and through that Annette can now move around with ease, even to the good samaritans Michelle Laufs and Sonja Nel without you it would not have been possible Goodman thank you very much for your sacrifice and time you took to unload the wheelchair for her It’s so good to know that there are more Angels coming your way. Here they will once again be surrounded by family and the necessary support for that #HOOPStoot for which they have been praying for so long. Meanwhile, GROOTfm 90.5 paid them a visit, and provided an immediate boost of #HOPE through SPAR, with a gift voucher of R1 500, a gas bottle, and a financial donation thanks to Ecomed Medical – so that they can use their new house can be furnished for the next chapter. Read the full story: https://www.grootfm.co.za/2022/09/28/joumensemymense-saam-met-spar-as-jy-niks-behalwe-hoop-het-nie/?fbclid=IwAR1XoQHAnI4u6y2N5Za_-Vmei-fNJ6eJAb7vol3bVkHOiDkWjfo4RR6po2o

Anna’s Portable Oxygen Concentrator

Ecomed Medical are very fortunate to have joined hands with Hot Cares to assist a patient in need. Anna needs to be on 24 hours Oxygen and was finding it very challenging during load shedding to keep her oxygen saturation levels over 90%. Ecomed Medical received the request from Hot Cares to reached out to Anna and we donated a portable oxygen concentrator to assist during these very trying times. We are hoping this alleviates the stress and gives Anna peace of mind during load shedding.

Mari en Drikus van der Merwe

Morning Ecomed, Where will I start, not words to say thank you enough. The news about Amanda hit us hard but didn’t ask us for a moment why and why. We just asked God to help and guide us so we could make it as easy as possible for her. We didn’t even know where to start and immediately within a week God had already sent us help by putting people like Storm and Ansie on our path. The word thank you is so small but means so much. We can only be forever grateful to Storm and Ansie and everyone involved with the help of the oximeter. We as a family sincerely care about this and know that Amanda is just as grateful for the Oximeter that helps her so much with breathing. From our hearts THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH THE LORD SEES YOU FOR THE GOOD WORK YOU ARE DOING. From the Le Roux Family

The Love of Christ

TLC, ‘The Love of Christ’, is a children’s home that was founded 30 years ago by a family, and has found families for more than 900 children during these 30 years. Their starting point is ‘we love, to let go’, which in itself drives their team to get a baby placed with a family as soon as possible. One of their big wishes is to put up a sign outside the gate that reads: ‘The happiest place on earth’. And, that’s exactly what our experience was with our visit. What makes them different? There are so many elements! They not only take in babies, but sometimes also their mothers – to whom they then give the facilities to ‘foster’ their own child, as they refer to it. TLC’s staff refer from early on, and acknowledge the children’s ‘tummy mummy’ and explain to the children why they cannot live permanently with their ‘tummy mummies’. Liezel Meyer

Today we visited our Ecomed Medical Charista Chaz Grobler family, We would NOT have come this far, if it weren’t for you amazing people who have become such an Integral part of our lives, especially our girl’s lives, and we are sooo extremely thankful to have you part of our journey!!!!!!! Thank you for always making sure our girls are sorted and for being there for them at a moment’s notice!!!!! We really do not see you as strangers or just an oxygen company, you truly are our family!!! Our girls saw “outside” for the very first time ever, and they couldn’t stop staring at the trees outside Ecomed, and just basking in the awesomeness of the wonderous creation of God’s own special handy work. Was such a HUGE reminder that we should all just stop and smell the roses, the nature, the fresh air, it was just so gobsmacking to witness how they were just in absolute awe!!!

Eugene

It is with a heart bursting with appreciation and gratitude to God and Ecomed for the wheel chair that Eugene received. This means the world to him and his family. I pray that God will bless Ecomed and everyone person that assisted with the arrangement to make this wish a reality. There is not enough words to describe how much this act of kindness means to better Eugene’s life.

Single mother Noku

Single mother Noku really has been through the ringer, and it’s stories like hers that really pull at the heartstrings. Losing two siblings in the space of a couple of weeks and being handed the responsibility of looking after their children, as well as her own, and all of this after spending the last year in chronic pain, after being injured at work. Hot Cares just had to make a difference to her life this Christmas.

Katrien and Rudi

The title of Katrien’s cry for help was: ‘No money just an ENGINE for our Bakkie’. Katrien and Rudi are in a deep hole. Last year, while visiting Rudi’s mother in Vanderbijlpark, a large part of their income fell away when the engine of their vehicle broke. Rudi not only did garbage removal for their own bread and butter, but also for a man who lives on the street for whom you could offer a job. Rudi started this job when he was laid off in February last year due to Covid 19. After sending out a multitude of CVs to get Rudi a new job, and no response, they sit with their hands in their hair, with worries, but also with hope. It’s little, but it’s there! Yes, sometimes it is easy to say that someone should make a plan and be proactive. But sometimes, someone just needs a push of HOPE, a starting point to a next chapter. Nazareth House

Ecomed Medical visited Nazareth House recently. Their unstoppable purpose has paved a movement of compassion and humanity – one that continues to build through the work of all who strive to make the world a better place. Nazareth Care African Region turns 138 in the year 2020. Over the last 3 centuries, they have helped to significantly improve the lives of thousands of impoverished communities and suffering children. In 1991, Nazareth House was the first home in South Africa to admit babies and young children with HIV/AIDS. Nazareth House gives everyone in its care the best possible care they need regardless of age, background, or circumstances. We hope the two oxygen concentrators can assist many lives that pass through your doors.

Chesed Jamu

Chesed Jamu was diagnosed last year in January when he was almost 3 years old with neuroblastoma. Chased was in ICU when he started chemotherapy which was done for 6 months until August last year. Around June 2022 they did surgery to remove the tumor which was not a success because the tumor had grown around the main blood vessels in the abdomen. From there we then proceeded to do radiation the whole month of October and part of November. Early December on check up the doctor said the cancer had moved to his neck so we started Chemotherapy to keep it at bay. At that time his left leg was now very painful so the doctors gave him morphine. We went back last week Thursday for check up that’s when he had to go on oxygen and received blood as his hemoglobin was very low. That was when we were told no treatment will continued as his bone marrow has crashed and therefore we need to go home and care for him there with painkillers. Thank you for helping supply oxygen to the 4 year old child and loaning him a machine. Ecomed and staff rock. Pet Beyer

Sonia Oosthuizen

Silverfields Veterinary Clinic

Lebo, a cherished colleague at Silverfields Veterinary Clinic for a decade, is renowned in the community as the “dog whisperer” and “cat charmer.” Sadly, he’s currently grappling with a severe leg bone infection, causing excruciating pain and impairing his ability to fulfil his duties as a kennel assistant effectively. As a kennel assistant, Lebo’s livelihood is directly affected. The persistent pain compromises his capacity to work and provide for himself and his family. He urgently needs surgery to clean out the infection as it is in the actual bone and can’t drain by itself. Lebo has been through the government hospitals but has been moved from pillar to post and advised of their lengthy waiting periods. The surgery he urgently requires comes with a staggering cost of up to R100,000. Time is of the essence, and without timely intervention, Lebo’s health and livelihood hang in the balance.

A Flight to Aunt Nonnie

Miané Pretorius was born at 39 weeks on 7 June 2017 as a healthy baby weighing 2.8 kg. She was never sick, a normal child and her vaccination appointments and check-ups at the pediatrician never showed anything abnormal in her health. In January 2023 she displays very yellow, remains very tired and gets a very high fever every afternoon at the same time. She is admitted to the South African Hospital for antibiotics treatment, and to do a liver biopsy, gastroscopy and colonoscopy. All the medical team could note was that there was inflammation and small potatoes in her colon and liver that were displaying like “spiders”. Miané is diagnosed with an immune disease that is not only incurable, but that has had an effect on her liver. This diagnosis, during which her liver systematically hardens, is known as liver cirrhosis. Miané’s parents are at a crossroads with the fact that the immune disease is affecting the liver, and the option for a liver transplant is being sabotaged by the immune disease. Unfortunately, the Pretorius family can now only go on with the medication she is currently taking in order to stabilize and ease her quality of life. Miané, her Mother Allison, Father Johan and Brother Handré came to visit GROOTfm 90.5 A BIG THANK YOU to Jenny’s Travel, Ecomed Medical and Caring Daisies who helped this dream of Miané come true. Beloved Miané, enjoy your visit with Aunt Nonnie!

Teddython HOT 102.7FM

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to Ben, a young man who has been helped by Ecomed’s generosity and to share how your support has made a significant difference in his life during an incredibly challenging time. Earlier this year, Ben faced an unexpected health crisis when he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his small intestine. Complications quickly followed, requiring emergency surgery and post-operative care. Due to issues with his medical aid, he was transferred to Steve Biko Hospital, where he underwent a critical operation to address the blockage. Unfortunately, his journey became even more complex as he developed septicaemia shortly after his procedure at Steve Biko, which led to a life-threatening infection. After an additional surgery at a private hospital and a challenging two weeks in the ICU, Ben’s resilience brought him through, but he now faces an incisional hernia requiring further surgery as well as mounting medical bills not be covered by his medical aid. The strain of these medical and financial hurdles has been substantial, impacting Ben and his family emotionally, physically, and financially. Recognising the critical nature of his circumstances, Hot Cares directed Ecomed’s support to help Ben by covering the excess owing amount at Life Wilgers Hospital for his second surgery which came to R88,378.00. Your contribution has provided Ben and his family with relief and a sense of hope amid these challenges. Thank you for your trust in us and for making this vital assistance possible. Your kindness and support have had a profound impact on Ben’s life, and we are deeply grateful.
